Step 1 - Evaluation and Diagnosis

In the initial stage, a physiotherapist will assess your symptoms, medical history, and perform a physical examination, which may include a scan of the way you walk.

Step 2 - Conservative Treatment

The next stage typically involves non-surgical or conservative treatment options. This may include:

  • Rest and activity modification: Reducing or avoiding activities that aggravate the condition.
  • Shockwave Therapy: Radial pulse shockwaves are transmitted into the tissues to promote a faster healing response.
  • Exercise therapy: Stretching and strengthening exercises, as well as other modalities like ultrasound or laser therapy, to promote healing and improve tendon flexibility.
  • Orthotic devices: Using shoe inserts or custom orthotics to provide support and reduce strain on the Achilles tendon.
  • Heel lifts: Elevating the heel to relieve tension on the tendon or ankle joint.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ankle Pain

Ankle pain can result from injuries (sprains, strains, fractures), overuse, arthritis, tendonitis, or medical conditions like gout.

See a physiotherapist if you experience severe pain, significant swelling, a visible deformity, or if pain persists for more than a few days. Immediate attention is needed for suspected fractures or severe injuries.

Achilles tendon problems can arise through acute trauma which may cause inflammation of the Achilles tendon or chronic longer term degenerative tissue changes due to tissue overloading.

  • Gradually increase activity intensity.
  • Warm up and cool down properly.
  • Use correct technique during exercise.
  • Wear supportive footwear.
  • Avoid sudden changes in activity.

A physiotherapist can recommend strengthening exercises like calf raises, ankle circles, and balance activities.

Treatment may include physiotherapy, orthotics, pain management, or surgery, depending on the cause. A physiotherapist can outline the best plan.

Recovery varies: mild sprains may heal in a few weeks, while severe ones can take months. Chronic Achilles pain may take 8 weeks to 4 months to recover, with Shockwave therapy potentially speeding recovery

Use ice for acute injuries to reduce swelling and heat for chronic issues to relax muscles. Consult a physiotherapist for the best approach.
