What Causes Shoulder Pain? Why is Your Shoulder Pain Not Improving?
Shoulder complaints are the third most common musculoskeletal issue, following back and neck disorders. The highest incidence occurs in women and individuals aged 45 to 64 years. Among various shoulder disorders, shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS) is the most prevalent, accounting for 36% of cases.
Under normal circumstances, you shouldn't experience impingement or pain during shoulder movement.
Shoulder pain can stem from various structures, but in the case of shoulder impingement syndrome, the rotator cuff tendon becomes inflamed and swollen, and the bursa may also become inflamed. These conditions can occur independently or simultaneously. The severity of the injury can range from mild tendon inflammation and bursitis to calcific tendonitis (where bone forms within the tendon) and even partial or full-thickness tendon tears, which may require surgical intervention.
Over time, repeated irritation can cause the tendons to thicken, making it difficult for them to glide through tight spaces. This thickening can lead to degeneration and changes in the microscopic structure of the tendon, resulting in decreased circulation and a chronic condition known as tendonosis.
If your pain is not improving, you are not alone, this is a common situation we encounter. Early assessment and examination can help prevent symptoms from worsening.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain can arise from a variety of reasons, and understanding these causes is the first step toward relief! Common culprits include rotator cuff injuries, tendonitis, bursitis, frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), arthritis, shoulder impingement, and dislocation. Knowing what's behind the pain can really help in figuring out the best approach to tackle it.
Getting to the bottom of your shoulder pain starts with a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional. They'll check your range of motion and strength, and look for any signs of injury or inflammation. To pinpoint specific issues, imaging tests like X-rays, MRIs, or ultrasounds may be utilized. This comprehensive approach ensures an accurate diagnosis, paving the way for effective solutions.
When it comes to treating shoulder pain, there's a range of effective options. Depending on the situation, your treatment may involve rest, pain management strategies like medications or injections, and physical therapy. Engaging in targeted exercises to enhance shoulder muscle strength and flexibility is also beneficial. And for more severe cases, surgical intervention can be considered. The key is to find a solution that works for you and allows you to enjoy life fully.
The journey to recovery can vary significantly based on the cause and severity of your shoulder pain. Acute issues may show improvement in just a few days to weeks, while chronic pain can take longer to resolve and may require ongoing management. Patience and a proactive approach are your best allies in this process of recovery.
While it's essential to allow your shoulder some rest initially, gently staying active can actually aid in recovery. Engaging in specific shoulder exercises under the guidance of a physiotherapist helps prevent stiffness and promotes healing. It's all about finding the right balance.
Preventing shoulder pain involves some thoughtful lifestyle changes. Focus on maintaining good posture, avoid repetitive strain, and incorporate shoulder-strengthening exercises into your routine. Always use proper lifting and carrying techniques when handling heavy objects to protect those shoulders.
If your shoulder pain is severe, lingers, or comes with weakness or limited mobility, especially after an injury, don't hesitate to consult a doctor. Early intervention can make a significant difference.
It's important to know that untreated chronic shoulder pain might lead to reduced mobility, muscle weakness, or difficulties in daily activities. Seeking timely medical advice can play a crucial role in preventing such complications.
Absolutely! Certain exercises designed to enhance shoulder mobility, strength, and flexibility can be incredibly helpful. Your Physiotherapist can guide you with personalized recommendations tailored specifically to your needs.
To maintain comfort while working, ensure your workstation is ergonomically set up, take regular breaks to stretch, uphold good posture, and steer clear of activities that exacerbate shoulder discomfort.
Note: Just a reminder: This information is meant to be general. Always consult with a qualified healthcare professional for personalized advice. Your journey toward shoulder health is important, and seeking guidance can lead you to the best treatment plan for you!

Super friendly staff. After suffering knee and lower back pain for ages, in desperate need I contacted these people. I have seen Regina twice now and she has done more for me in these 2 sessions than I have had in the past few years. Wonderful! She knows exactly what they problems are and how to fix them. I already have less pain than I have had for many years. Thankyou all.
- Sally Turney
Fantastic experience and engagement from the Physio. Without the support of the Physiotherapist we would not of got a referal for my daughter which supported a hospital appointment and a diagnosis. They made Penny (age 7) feel completely at ease and comfortable. Highly recommended for their knowledge and attention
- Louise Taylor
Great Physio therapy practice, very flexible and offering both 1:1 appointments and group exercise and rehab sessions, definetly recommend
- Magdalena Brandner
I would HIGHLY reccomend Back in Motion. I suffered for 8+ years with a condition and then had a major operation to correct it. I lost all confidence in how to move and use my body safely and comfortably. The calm, knowledgeable, friendly and careful handling by all the staff, but particularly Aimee has meant that I have regained confidence and in turn fitness. The careful progression and collaboration has been excellent. Thank you all! PS physio works best if YOU work with your physio!
- Sheila K
Brilliant new premises. Nice & friendly staff. Knowledgeable and understanding Physiotherapist.
- Alan Boulter
I have used Back In Motion for two courses of physiotherapy treatment over the past couple of years for an Achilles Tendinitis problem; the most recent was during the past couple of months.
I find this company to be very professional and also very friendly and welcoming from the moment you step through their door. I would particularly like to mention Salman Abedi who was my most recent physiotherapist at Back In Motion. He was outstanding, and I would even go as far as to say, he was the best physiotherapist I have ever had. I can highly recommend him and Back In Motion.
- Jacquie Wright
Dan gave me an hour sports massage and when I tell you I came out of it feeling completely different. It was amazing. I would highly recommend that to anyone that has some sort of problem. My neck and shoulders haven't felt this relaxed in years. And to top it all off, it was so good and I was so relaxed after that I proceeded to sleep for 3 hours
- Georgia Smith (Gee)
From the very beginning everyone was friendly and knowledgeable. I have had physio with Simran, who worked hard to achieve the best outcomes and was very friendly and knowledgeable. We had to include Gemma, who again explainedevery step in a friendly way but worked with me and not just told what to do. Communication is excellent even to just phoning to check how I was doing between appointments. I have also had a massage with Ailish, she read my history and explained everything she did and how it relates to another part of the body or why it was under stress. All in all this has been the most positive couple of mo the I have had after being under the hospital before and feeling I was getting no where. I now feel there is an end to the pain I’m going through and it is thanks to the team in spriwston
