What Causes Knee Pain? Why Isn't Your Knee Pain Getting Better?
If you're experiencing knee pain, stiffness, or discomfort, it's tempting to ignore it and hope it will resolve on its own. You might think it's just an ache or stiffness that everyone your age experiences.
However, if there's no obvious reason for your pain and it has persisted for weeks without improvement, you are not alone. This is a common issue we encounter at Back in Motion.
It's essential to take action now, as each episode of knee pain can weaken the muscles that support your knee, making you more susceptible to future knee pain episodes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Knee Pain
Knee pain can arise from a variety of fascinating factors. It may stem from injuries such as sprains or strains, or perhaps due to overuse. Conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can also play a role, alongside meniscus tears and ligament injuries, including ACL or MCL tears. Additional contributors like bursitis and tendonitis, along with certain underlying medical conditions, can also lead to this discomfort. Understanding these causes can empower you to take proactive steps toward relief.
There’s a silver lining when it comes to managing knee pain at home! Simple remedies can provide significant relief. Consider resting and elevating your knee to promote healing. Cold or heat packs can work wonders too, numbing the pain or relaxing the muscles. Over-the-counter pain relievers can be effective allies, while gentle stretching exercises can enhance mobility. Don’t forget to wear supportive shoes and steer clear of activities that make your pain worse. With these practical strategies, you can start feeling better in no time.
It's essential to be mindful about when to seek medical care. If your knee pain is severe, lingers or intensifies, or if you notice swelling, redness, or warmth around the joint, it’s time to consult a professional. It’s also crucial to seek help if you're struggling to put weight on your knee or if the pain follows an injury. Taking these signs seriously ensures that you receive the appropriate care and support for your knee health.
The world of knee pain treatment offers an impressive range of options. Physiotherapy is a fantastic starting point, helping to alleviate pain and build strength. Depending on your situation, you might explore pain medications, knee braces, or even orthotics. In some cases, surgery might be necessary. Also, embracing lifestyle changes, like managing your weight and participating in low-impact exercises, can significantly enhance your overall well-being. There’s hope, and relief is very much within reach.
Absolutely! Engaging in specific exercises can be a game-changer for knee pain. Strengthening the muscles around your knee, especially the quadriceps and hamstrings, can offer greater support and stability for the joint. Low-impact activities such as swimming, cycling, or using an elliptical machine are wonderful for maintaining fitness without added strain. Just be sure to consult a physiotherapist who can tailor a program to your unique needs and ensure your safety on this journey.
Definitely! Implementing a few lifestyle changes can make a world of difference in preventing knee pain. Maintaining a healthy weight reduces stress on your knees and helps you feel more energetic. Regular exercise to strengthen your legs is invaluable, as is wearing the right footwear for your activities. Additionally, practicing proper form during sports and workouts can safeguard your knees from injury. It’s all about being proactive and taking charge of your knee health.
Yes, it’s important to recognize that knee pain can, at times, indicate a more serious issue, such as a torn ligament or signs of osteoarthritis. If your pain is intense, persists despite your best efforts at home, or is accentuated by other troubling symptoms, please don’t hesitate to seek medical evaluation. Understanding the root cause is crucial for effective treatment.
Not necessarily. The decision to modify your activity level depends on the intensity and source of your knee pain. While some adjustments, like temporarily avoiding high-impact exercises, can be beneficial, remaining active is often encouraged. Gentle exercises and low-impact activities are fantastic for sustaining joint flexibility and strength, keeping you engaged and moving forward on your wellness journey.
Absolutely! Physiotherapy can offer tremendous benefits for managing knee pain effectively. A skilled physiotherapist will assess your unique condition, provide personalized exercise programs, and may employ techniques like soft tissue release or acupuncture to ease your discomfort. Moreover, they’ll guide you on safe movement strategies to protect and strengthen your knee joint. Regular physiotherapy sessions can be an empowering step towards regaining mobility and comfort.
Keep in mind that this information is foundational and shouldn't replace personalized guidance from a qualified healthcare professional. It’s always wise to consult with a trusted physiotherapist who can evaluate your specific circumstances and help craft the most effective treatment plan for your knee pain. Your health is important, and support is always available!

Super friendly staff. After suffering knee and lower back pain for ages, in desperate need I contacted these people. I have seen Regina twice now and she has done more for me in these 2 sessions than I have had in the past few years. Wonderful! She knows exactly what they problems are and how to fix them. I already have less pain than I have had for many years. Thankyou all.
- Sally Turney
Fantastic experience and engagement from the Physio. Without the support of the Physiotherapist we would not of got a referal for my daughter which supported a hospital appointment and a diagnosis. They made Penny (age 7) feel completely at ease and comfortable. Highly recommended for their knowledge and attention
- Louise Taylor

I would HIGHLY reccomend Back in Motion. I suffered for 8+ years with a condition and then had a major operation to correct it. I lost all confidence in how to move and use my body safely and comfortably. The calm, knowledgeable, friendly and careful handling by all the staff, but particularly Aimee has meant that I have regained confidence and in turn fitness. The careful progression and collaboration has been excellent. Thank you all! PS physio works best if YOU work with your physio!

- Alan Boulter
I have used Back In Motion for two courses of physiotherapy treatment over the past couple of years for an Achilles Tendinitis problem; the most recent was during the past couple of months.
I find this company to be very professional and also very friendly and welcoming from the moment you step through their door. I would particularly like to mention Salman Abedi who was my most recent physiotherapist at Back In Motion. He was outstanding, and I would even go as far as to say, he was the best physiotherapist I have ever had. I can highly recommend him and Back In Motion.
- Jacquie Wright
Dan gave me an hour sports massage and when I tell you I came out of it feeling completely different. It was amazing. I would highly recommend that to anyone that has some sort of problem. My neck and shoulders haven't felt this relaxed in years. And to top it all off, it was so good and I was so relaxed after that I proceeded to sleep for 3 hours
- Georgia Smith (Gee)
From the very beginning everyone was friendly and knowledgeable. I have had physio with Simran, who worked hard to achieve the best outcomes and was very friendly and knowledgeable. We had to include Gemma, who again explainedevery step in a friendly way but worked with me and not just told what to do. Communication is excellent even to just phoning to check how I was doing between appointments. I have also had a massage with Ailish, she read my history and explained everything she did and how it relates to another part of the body or why it was under stress. All in all this has been the most positive couple of mo the I have had after being under the hospital before and feeling I was getting no where. I now feel there is an end to the pain I’m going through and it is thanks to the team in spriwston
