Understanding Sciatica: Why Is Your Leg Pain Sticking Around?
If you're dealing with leg pain, it's completely understandable to think it might just be a minor ache or stiffness that comes with age. Nevertheless, if the discomfort has lingered for weeks, it's essential to listen to your body and seek clarity.
Often, there's no obvious reason for the pain, but it's important to know that persistent discomfort is quite common. Sciatica can develop gradually, typically due to irritation of the sciatic nerve as it runs from your back to your leg. Getting a comprehensive evaluation is key to finding the right diagnosis and treatment.
Don't hesitate to take action! If your sciatic nerve irritation has lasted more than a couple of weeks, it's time to explore solutions. With the proper care, there's every reason to look forward to relief and regaining your full range of activity. Remember, you're not alone in this journey to better health.

Understanding Sciatica Pain: A Comprehensive Overview
Sciatica arises from the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body which runs from the spine into the leg. This condition is often linked to factors such as spinal joint dysfunction in the lumbar spine or muscular issues in the lower back or buttock region. Assessing which structure(s) is the cause can be the first step in effectively addressing and managing the pain.
To accurately diagnose sciatica, a healthcare professional typically conducts a thorough physical examination to assess your symptoms. They may recommend imaging tests like X-rays or MRI, to pinpoint the source of the nerve irritation or compression. This methodical approach ensures that you receive the most appropriate care tailored to your specific situation.
Sciatica can present as a sharp, shooting pain that travels from your lower back through the buttocks and down the back and side of the leg. Other symptoms may include tingling, numbness, dull ache or muscle weakness in the affected leg.
There are various treatment options to consider for managing sciatica pain. These may include pain relief techniques such as medication, acupuncture, physiotherapy to support your recovery, with targeted exercises that enhance flexibility and strengthen core stabilizing muscles. In more severe cases, surgery might be necessary to relieve nerve compression, but many individuals find significant relief through non-invasive methods first.
Recovery from sciatica varies depending on its severity and underlying cause. Acute cases often improve significantly within a few weeks with the right approach, while chronic scenarios may require a longer commitment to treatment. Staying positive and following your treatment plan can make a huge difference in your recovery journey.
Finding the right balance between rest and activity is crucial. While resting during acute flare-ups is important, engaging in gentle activities and specific exercises recommended by your healthcare professional can support recovery and prevent stiffness. Staying active within your comfort zone can lead to quicker healing.
Absolutely! Exercises that promote stretching and strengthening of the lower back and leg and buttock muscles can be incredibly beneficial for alleviating sciatica pain. Consulting a healthcare provider or Physiotherapist can provide you with personalized exercise recommendations that fit your needs.
Definitely! Simple lifestyle adjustments, like maintaining good posture, exercising regularly to strengthen muscles, using proper body mechanics during lifting, and managing your weight, can significantly help in managing and preventing sciatica pain. A proactive approach can lead to a healthier back and improved well-being.
It is ideal to reach out to a healthcare professional if your pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by bladder or bowel control issues, or if you experience sudden weakness in the leg. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes.
While most cases of sciatica resolve with timely treatment, untreated or chronic sciatica can potentially result in reduced mobility or muscle weakness in the affected leg. Seeking prompt medical advice can help prevent these complications, allowing you to regain your full strength and activity level.
As always, remember that this information serves as general guidance. It's essential to consult a trusted healthcare professional to evaluate your individual case and determine an effective treatment plan for your unique situation. Your path to relief and recovery starts here.

Super friendly staff. After suffering knee and lower back pain for ages, in desperate need I contacted these people. I have seen Regina twice now and she has done more for me in these 2 sessions than I have had in the past few years. Wonderful! She knows exactly what they problems are and how to fix them. I already have less pain than I have had for many years. Thankyou all.
- Sally Turney
Fantastic experience and engagement from the Physio. Without the support of the Physiotherapist we would not of got a referal for my daughter which supported a hospital appointment and a diagnosis. They made Penny (age 7) feel completely at ease and comfortable. Highly recommended for their knowledge and attention
- Louise Taylor

- Magdalena Brandner
I would HIGHLY reccomend Back in Motion. I suffered for 8+ years with a condition and then had a major operation to correct it. I lost all confidence in how to move and use my body safely and comfortably. The calm, knowledgeable, friendly and careful handling by all the staff, but particularly Aimee has meant that I have regained confidence and in turn fitness. The careful progression and collaboration has been excellent. Thank you all! PS physio works best if YOU work with your physio!
- Sheila K

- Alan Boulter
I have used Back In Motion for two courses of physiotherapy treatment over the past couple of years for an Achilles Tendinitis problem; the most recent was during the past couple of months.
I find this company to be very professional and also very friendly and welcoming from the moment you step through their door. I would particularly like to mention Salman Abedi who was my most recent physiotherapist at Back In Motion. He was outstanding, and I would even go as far as to say, he was the best physiotherapist I have ever had. I can highly recommend him and Back In Motion.
- Jacquie Wright
Dan gave me an hour sports massage and when I tell you I came out of it feeling completely different. It was amazing. I would highly recommend that to anyone that has some sort of problem. My neck and shoulders haven't felt this relaxed in years. And to top it all off, it was so good and I was so relaxed after that I proceeded to sleep for 3 hours
- Georgia Smith (Gee)
From the very beginning everyone was friendly and knowledgeable. I have had physio with Simran, who worked hard to achieve the best outcomes and was very friendly and knowledgeable. We had to include Gemma, who again explainedevery step in a friendly way but worked with me and not just told what to do. Communication is excellent even to just phoning to check how I was doing between appointments. I have also had a massage with Ailish, she read my history and explained everything she did and how it relates to another part of the body or why it was under stress. All in all this has been the most positive couple of mo the I have had after being under the hospital before and feeling I was getting no where. I now feel there is an end to the pain I’m going through and it is thanks to the team in spriwston
